LIL THOMAS | DEPARTMENT HEAD | HALIFAX
Originally from England David “Lil” Thomas moved to Newfoundland in 1971 and cut his teeth in the music scene as a guitar player from his early teen years and into his early 20’s. After enjoying national success with his band The Thomas Trio and The Red Albino the whole group moved to Toronto. The Band toured Canada and enjoyed a successful career.After disbanding in 1993 Lil decided to pursue a career in the recording and live music industry. As an honors graduate at Trebas Institute for Recording Arts he started working in various aspects of the music recording/live music and Film and TV production industries. He spent 3 yrs at Westbury Show systems, 2 seasons on The Mike Bullard Show and a 3yr stint on the Audio Truck remote mobile recording for many top Canadian and International Artists.In 1998 he decided to return to the east coast of Canada and started working with Salter Street Films as a SFX editor and Sound Designer. In 2000, while still working at Salter Street Films he along with his brother and another business partner decided to design, build, and operate their own recording studio. The Sonic Temple is now a 5 time ECMA and Music Nova Scotia award winning facility.Lil started teaching at the studio part time for The Centre for Arts and Technology in 2005. In 2006 he was offered the Department Head position and has held that post since that time. There are 2 studios at the new school and the program has grown from a small single cohort in 2006 to a program that graduates approximately 40-50 students per year.Our students are working in all facets of the industry and are represented in almost every province in Canada and several in the States.
TONY MURPHY | INSTRUCTOR | HALIFAX
We all take our hats off to Tony Murphy and his 30 years of experience in teaching, music production and performance. He has worked on radio, music and audio production for film and television.Tony attended Dalhousie University and took Music Education where he specialized in computer and studio application software. Since then, he has built a strong relationship with the Music Department of the university which has helped his students to see his live music performances. Such experience really boosts the interests of Audio Engineering students.Tony is an industry professional music producer and project manager. He has worked on classical, rock, jazz and many other genres. He has outstanding management skills when it comes to his student projects. Truly, Tony has played an important role in enhancing our programs especially in the fields of Digital Filmmaking, Audio Engineering and Animation.
MIKE HASTINGS | INSTRUCTOR | HALIFAX
Originally from Winnipeg Manitoba, Mike Hastings moved out east to pursue a career as an Audio Engineer. Continuing his audio studies at The Centre for Arts and Technology, he received the IDEALS achievement award for highest standings in their twenty-one month Audio Engineering course.With almost a decade of experience composing and producing instrumental music in various genres from Hip Hop to Hybrid Orchestral music, Mike brings a strong technical and musical background into the studio environment.In addition to working with artists as a producer, recording and mixing engineer, Mike has experience providing sound design for T.V. and internet media as well as several years of teaching college level audio engineering courses.
